In celebration of #WomensHistoryMonth, miSci is th In celebration of #WomensHistoryMonth, miSci is thrilled to highlight the achievements of Nancy DeLoye Fitzroy, one of the world’s earliest woman helicopter pilots, and the first woman in the United States to head a major professional engineering society, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
.
A native of the Pittsfield, MA area, Fitzroy graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1949 with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. She worked at General Electric from 1950 until her retirement in 1987, serving in a number of engineering roles. She specialized in heat transfer and fluid flow research, and early in her career was among the first engineers to work on the design of heat transfer surfaces in nuclear reactor cores. Later she worked in corporate research and development, where she consulted on technical problems in the field of heat transfer in gas turbines, space satellites, and other GE products. A prolific researcher, she is the author of more than 100 technical papers and holds three patents.

Did you know that the first telegraph message was Did you know that the first telegraph message was sent by inventor Samuel F.B. Morse on May 24, 1844, over an experimental line from Washington, D.C., to Baltimore? The message said: "What hath God wrought?" Taken from the Bible, Numbers 23:23, and recorded on a paper tape, the phrase had been suggested to Morse by Annie Ellsworth, the young daughter of a friend. The success of the experiment would forever change the national communication system!
.
Try your hand at sending a message with Morse Code and learn all about the evolution of communication technology in the exhibit “Let’s Connect!” on view now at miSci.
.
Featuring engaging interactives and historical objects from the Museum’s collection, the exhibit is fun for all ages!
.
The Museum is open on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
