Cloud chambers allow us to “see” the invisible! In this short clip from The Power of the Atom, preserved in miSci’s archives, we see a tiny piece of uranium inside a simple cloud chamber. In this film, you can see streaks of clouds forming as the uranium releases tiny subatomic particles. This release of particles is what we call radiation, and the tiny bits of matter act just like dust; they help the gas inside the chamber condense into clouds. Just like bubbles forming in soda, condensation occurs most easily when there are imperfections, scratches, or dust that the newly transformed material can hold on to.

Chambers like these were used with magnets in the late 19th century to search for all kinds of exotic subatomic particles.

Almost 200 years ago the official records for 50 y

Almost 200 years ago the official records for 50 years of innovation and invention in the fledgling United States were destroyed by a catastrophic fire. The US Patent Office, formed by the Patent Act of 1790, had been housed in a government owned hotel in Washington D.C. In the early morning hours of December 15, 1836, a fire began in the lower levels that quickly destroyed the building and nearly 10,000 patents held within. This is an illustration of the hotel prior to the fire; the engraving was created in the early 19th century and is housed in the Library of Congress.

Following the fire, the patent office reached out to what inventors they could to recover copies of original drawings and plans; less than 3,000 patents were able to be restored. Following this disaster, the patent office adopted their procedures to preserve records. The next time a fire broke out, in 1877, no patents would be completely lost to the fire.

The exhibit guides you as you discover the solar system first hand with the help of virtual astronauts as you land on multiple worlds, including the Moon, Mars, and Jupiter. Designed with the help of NASA experts, the exhibition is fun for the whole family and takes STEM learning into outer space.

Throughout each stage of the exhibit, you have your own crew of virtual content experts. These digital characters help you learn what’s needed to fly a spaceship, pilot a lander, and drive a surface rover. Then they are with you as you climb into the simulators to actually perform these feats, in a thrilling narrative adventure spanning the solar system.
In each space capsule, a massive 70” monitor serves as the ‘windshield,’ giving you a first-person view of your adventures. Touch-screens and an industrial-quality joystick put you in command. During missions, the entire cockpit comes alive with animated lighting effects, game visuals, and sounds that make you believe you ARE an astronaut!

“Remembering Storytown” (miSci’s latest Lect

“Remembering Storytown” (miSci’s latest Lecture Gallery exhibit) opens tomorrow—featuring amazing vintage photos and some memorabilia from the park!

Storytown originally opened in 1954 with rides and attractions based on a fairy tale theme. In the 1970s, founder Charley Wood began adding thrill rides that appealed to adults, including the park’s first roller coaster and the Desperado Plunge, a water ride that culminates with a 50-foot drop.
.
In 1982 a new name, The Great Escape, reflected a growing park that in the next decade added a water park, the Steamin’ Demon inverted coaster, and The Comet, a large wooden coaster.
.
Today, the park is known as Six Flags Great Escape, and features 135 rides and attractions. While some early attractions were updated or replaced, the park still retains many of its early features and the spirit of its founder.
