After sunset tonight, look toward the southeast to After sunset tonight, look toward the southeast to watch the sturgeon super moon rise! It will reach peak illumination at 9:36 p.m. ET.
.
Named by the Native American Algonquin tribe after sturgeon fish that were more easily caught in the Great Lakes and other bodies of water during this time of year, the sturgeon moon ends 2022's series of four supermoons, which began in May, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac.

On August 10th, 1990, the Magellan spacecraft bega On August 10th, 1990, the Magellan spacecraft began it's orbit of the planet Venus after a 15-month journey from Earth. The space craft spent the next four years mapping the second planet from the sun.
.
This hemispheric view of Venus was created using more than a decade of radar investigations culminating in the 1990-1994 Magellan mission, and is centered on the planet's North Pole. The Magellan spacecraft imaged more than 98 percent of the planet and a mosaic of the images (most with illumination from the west) forms the image base. Gaps in the Magellan coverage were filled with images from the Earth-based Arecibo radar in a region centered roughly on 0 degree latitude and longitude, and with a neutral tone elsewhere (primarily near the south pole).
.
This composite image was processed to improve contrast and to emphasize small features, and was color-coded to represent elevation. Gaps in the elevation data from the Magellan radar altimeter were filled with altimetry from the Venera spacecraft and the Pioneer Venus missions.

Notable for being one of the first television stat Notable for being one of the first television stations in the world, WRGB (channel 6) serves the Capital District of New York as an affiliate of CBS. It is owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group alongside CW affiliate WCWN (channel 45k). Both stations share studios on Balltown Road in Niskayuna, New York (with a Schenectady postal address), while WRGB's transmitter is located on the Helderberg Escarpment west of New Salem.
.
The station began broadcasting experimentally in early 1928, with the first daily programs being broadcast later that year. It later became one of a handful of TV stations licensed for commercial broadcasting operation before the end of World War II.
.
The station launched the on-camera careers of TV chefs Art "Mr. Food" Ginsburg in the mid-1970s; and of Rachael Ray, who launched her "30 Minute Meals" segment on WRGB's newscasts in the mid-1990s.

As NASA's Juno mission completed its 43rd close fl As NASA's Juno mission completed its 43rd close flyby of Jupiter last month, its JunoCam instrument captured this striking view of vortices – hurricane-like spiral wind patterns – near the planet's north pole. These powerful storms can be over 30 miles (50 kilometers) in height and hundreds of miles across. Figuring out how they form is key to understanding Jupiter's atmosphere, as well as the fluid dynamics and cloud chemistry that create the planet's other atmospheric features.
.
Scientists are particularly interested in the vortices' varying shapes, sizes, and colors. For example, cyclones, which spin counter-clockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern, and anti-cyclones, which rotate clockwise in the northern hemisphere and counter-clockwise in the southern hemisphere, exhibit very different colors and shapes.

🚦Every year on August 5th, International Traffi 🚦Every year on August 5th, International Traffic Light Day highlights the importance of the traffic light. It’s also a day that commemorates the installation of the first traffic signal system.
.
Did you grow up in a small town or rural area? If so, you may not have grown up with traffic lights. Small towns can usually get by with stop signs only. However, installing a traffic light usually means an increase in population. Without these important lights, it simply would not be safe to drive. Not having traffic lights would also greatly reduce the flow and speed of traffic.
.
The world’s first electric traffic signal was installed on August 5th, 1914 in Cleveland, Ohio. The traffic signal was placed on the corner of Euclid Avenue and East 105th Street. Some people dispute the location of the world’s first traffic light. In 1868, a traffic device in London helped people know when to stop and when to use caution. In 1912, a police officer in Salt Lake City, Utah installed a wooden box with red and green lights onto a pole.
.
This 1924 photograph from miSci’s archives features patrolman Karl Peters with an experimental traffic light in Schenectady, New York, at the corner of State Street and Broadway in downtown Schenectady. The 3-section traffic control signal was equipped with a control box on the pole. Landmarks in the picture include a trolley car form the Schenectady Railway Company and the Hotel Edison.
