At miSci, we offer a variety of volunteer opportunities to fit your special interests in a number of departments and provide tremendous flexibility to work within your desired number of hours.

Function: Recruit, orient, place, train and supervise volunteers. Build awareness around the Museum’s Volunteer Opportunities. Respond to inquiries from potential volunteers. Work with departments to assure appropriate orientation, paperwork and training is provided for volunteers in their departments. Acknowledge volunteer efforts and provide support and encouragement. Maintain volunteer files.
Title: Guest Relations/Gift Shop Volunteer
Function: The Guest Relations position is a great way to work directly with the public and provide a quality customer service experience. Duties could include answering phones/transferring calls to appropriate departments, processing admissions and retail sales with a cash register, inventory management, relaying information about museum programs, exhibits, benefits of membership and answering basic questions about group and school bookings.Hall Host
Function: Help inspire visitors about extraordinary science and technology developments from the Capital Region. Hall Hosts help guests interact with the exhibits and enhance their visitor experience.
Title: Program/Curriculum Developer
Function: Enhances existing and creates new programs and curriculum content for school, outreach and public programs. Assists in the preparation of materials and educational programs needed for new exhibitions and other Special Events and Programs as needed. A great fit for educators. Helps plan teacher workshop and training programs.Volunteer Educator
Function: This position provides a great opportunity to work with children of all ages to generate enthusiasm and excitement for science. Works with museum team members to teach or assist with School and Public Programs, Preschool Programs, Summer Camps, Science Demonstrations, Family Drop-In Programs, Scout Programs, Festivals, Lectures and various other Education Programs or as a Community Outreach.Administrative Assistant for Education
Function: Works with museum team members to develop calendars of events for School and Public Programs, Summer Camp visits, Science Demonstrations, Family Drop-In activities, Scout Programs, Festivals, Lectures and Gallery Tours. Ensure supplies for various programs are well-stocked at all times.Volunteer Planetarium Operator
Function: Assists in and teaches Planetarium shows and various other Astronomy related programs.Title: Upstate Train Associates (Volunteer Model Train Operator)
Function: Are you or anyone you know looking for a great hobby that will also let you operate the Model Trains when they run at miSci in December and January? Then join the upstate Train Associates. For 20 years, members of this group have volunteered their model train layout, their time, and their expertise at the museum. This wonderful organization is seeking new members. Function: The Tour Guide will provide a tour of museum spaces from time to time, by appointment as requested by constituents, in areas such as the main galleries, collections and archives.Marketing & Communications Volunteer
Function: The Marketing & Communications volunteer is an integral member of the team working to provide awareness and excitement about the museum’s offerings. The Marketing Volunteer would assist in promoting the Museum through traditional, online and social media outlets.Development Volunteer
Function: The Development Volunteer assists in cultivation of current and potential members and donors by thanking them, extending personal invitations, making phone calls, conducting member surveys, selling museum memberships, assisting with the planning and implementation of members and donor cultivation events, researching new potential individual supporters and corporate sponsors and assisting with database accuracy and updates as needed.Business Office/Bookkeeping Volunteer
Function: The Business Office Volunteer provides various administrative and bookkeeping functions.
Administrative Duties include answering business office phone calls and responding to inquiries; records retention, document destruction and organization; making phone calls on behalf of the organization; obtaining price quotes and competitive shopping; and performing Internet based research.
Bookkeeping functions include reconciliation of temporarily restricted net assets, Accounts Receivable processing, Accounts Payable aging evaluations, Investment Income Reasonableness tests, Audit preparation work, Compilation of general accounting journal entries, Depreciation calculations and Inventory adjustments and counts.Digitization Volunteer
Function: This volunteer works in the archives department to scan and catalog images from one of the largest photo collections in the world, the GE Photograph Collection. miSci has launched a new online photograph database, and miSci is looking for volunteers to scan photographs, upload images, and type basic information about each image into a web-based computer catalog.Exhibits Volunteer
Function: Exhibit Preparation: assist with processing of object collections for exhibit purposes; assist with care/preservation needs for object collections; preparation, mounting and installation of exhibit hardware; assist with graphic production and photographic scanning for exhibitions; assist with selection of objects and installation for small in-house displays.
Curatorial: conduct research into collections subjects and individual objects as necessary; assist with work toward exhibit scripts and content.Archives Volunteer
Function: Assist in the care of the Museums archives collections, including photographs, papers, advertising materials, and other forms of collections. Provide basic preservation measures to archives collections. Re-house new collections into acid-free folders and boxes; remove staples and paper clips, and interleave scrapbooks.
Assist with cataloging miSci's rich archives relating to science and technology. Catalog books, papers, and photographs relating to the history of science and technology in the Capital Region into computerized databases. Create finding aids that help researchers locate materials in the collections.Collections Volunteer
Function: Collections Management: assist with processing of object collections; assist with description and filling out catalogue sheets for incoming collections; work with databases for objects collections; assist with care/preservation needs for object collections; periodic inventory of collections
Curatorial: provide comment/recommendations on needs for collection in areas of expertise; conduct research into collections subjects and individual objects as necessary; assist with work toward exhibit scripts and content.Volunteer Researcher
Function: Work with miSci archivist to create content for the Museums website and answer reference questions relating to the history of GE and inventions in the Capital Region. miSci receives over a thousand requests for information each year from all over the world, and hosts nearly 400 researchers annually. This is a good fit for you if you have an interest or knowledge in a particular subject, such as GE history, turbines, home appliances, fans, radios, or any other subject relating to GE or science and technology in the region.
