Teen Science Café: Making Waves: How El Niño & Rainfall in the Tropics Influence Weather Around the World
see details +

Join Dr. Paul Roundy, Associate Professor of Atmospheric Science at UAlbany, for a science café talk on predicting weather. Weather more than a week away is incredibly difficult to predict. Storms in one part of the world can change the weather outcomes in another part, like a butterfly effect. Those who want to forecast weather can take advantage of a few tidbits of useful information to help them know whether it is more likely to be warmer, colder, wetter, or drier than normal in a couple weeks. One of these clues is the present pattern of rainfall in the tropics. Dr. Roundy's talk will explain two phenomena in tropical rainfall: El Niño, and the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO). He will give an overview picture of what these things are, and how they are used to help forecast weather a few weeks away.

Snacks served.
